Pressure and Fluid Contacts · Module P8

Other modules and the capstone

The final module follows pressure data beyond contact work, into pore pressure calibration, gas content estimates, well correlation and gas material balance. It then sets the capstone: a full contact study on the course well, from the raw test report to screened points, fits, contacts, compartments, saturation height and a contact range carried into the volume, with the record a reviewer needs.

What the module covers

  • Choosing which tests belong in a pore pressure calibration
  • Pressure points for gas content and correlation
  • Initial pressure for gas material balance
  • Capstone: from test report to contact range
  • Keeping a reviewable record
  • What a static pressure study cannot answer

Learning outcomes

After the module you should be able to:

  • Deliver a contact study a reviewer can follow, with its range and its limits.
  • Choose which pressure tests belong in each downstream workflow
  • Assemble a contact study a reviewer can check step by step

A short preview

Pressure tests are reused far beyond contact picking, and each use wants a different subset. Calibrating a shale compaction trend needs sands in pressure balance with the shales around them, so a depleted sand or a separate compartment would bias it. A gas material balance needs the initial reservoir pressure, taken before production. The capstone asks for the whole chain on one well, with every test kept or dropped for a stated reason and the final contact range typed into the volume in the right depth frame.

Who it is for

Petrophysicists, reservoir engineers and geoscientists who screen formation pressure tests, pick fluid contacts and carry them into volumes for exploration, appraisal and development decisions.

Prerequisites: None required; working familiarity with well logs and volumetrics helps. The hands-on steps use the Pressure Analysis panel in Formation Evaluation.

Take the module in the Learning Hub

Pressure and Fluid Contacts: Specialty course, sold separately: eight modules that turn a formation tester report into fluid contacts you can defend, from screened tests and gradients to capillary entry height and a contact range in the volume. The lesson opens in the Learning Hub once the track is purchased; graded quizzes and the certificate come with the certified option.
