Advanced Petrophysics · Module A2

Core-Log-Image Integration

Building an evidence chain from routine and special core analysis, thin sections, SEM and XRD, and borehole image logs, then using it to define and validate rock types. Methods include Winland R35 and the flow zone indicator, with the failure modes that break the chain.

What the module covers

  • Routine and special core analysis, and their limits
  • Core-to-log depth matching
  • Thin section, SEM and XRD mineralogy
  • Borehole image logs: structural versus sedimentary features
  • Rock typing with Winland R35 and the flow zone indicator
  • Validating rock types against test and production data

Learning outcomes

After the module you should be able to:

  • Build an evidence chain from routine and special core, logs and borehole images.
  • Combine core, log and image evidence into one characterisation
  • Define rock types and assign them to uncored intervals
  • Check rock types against dynamic data

A short preview

The flow zone indicator groups samples by pore geometry rather than by porosity alone. With core permeability k in millidarcies and porosity φ as a fraction, the reservoir quality index is RQI = 0.0314·√(k/φ) in micrometres, and FZI = RQI / (φ / (1 − φ)). Samples with similar FZI belong to the same hydraulic unit whatever their porosity. Rock types defined this way reach uncored wells only through their log responses, which is where image logs and a careful core-to-log depth match earn their place.

Who it is for

Experienced petrophysicists and geoscientists who interpret complex reservoirs and present interpretation risk to asset teams and management.

Prerequisites: The Intermediate Petrophysics track, or several years of interpretation work.
