Advanced Petrophysics · Module A1

Depositional Context and Petrophysical Behavior

Why depositional setting is a petrophysical input. The module links facies to pore geometry, clay distribution to log response and carbonate environments to pore types, then builds a facies–petrophysical matrix that turns geological variability into numerical ranges.

What the module covers

  • Facies control on pore geometry
  • Laminated, structural and dispersed clay, and their log responses
  • Vertical heterogeneity in depositional sequences
  • Carbonate environments and pore types
  • Depositional and diagenetic origins of wettability
  • Building a facies–petrophysical matrix

Learning outcomes

After the module you should be able to:

  • Tie porosity, permeability, saturation and capillary behaviour to the depositional fabric that controls them.
  • Explain how facies controls the petrophysical properties of a reservoir
  • Define petrophysical units from a depositional model
  • Express geological variability as numerical ranges

A short preview

Two sands with the same porosity can behave very differently if one is a well-sorted channel sand and the other a bioturbated, poorly sorted shoreface. Sorting and grain size set pore-throat size, pore-throat size sets permeability and capillary pressure, and capillary pressure sets how much water the rock holds at a given height above the free water level. A single porosity–permeability transform across both averages two different rocks into one that does not exist, and the error lands in the saturation-height model and the recovery estimate.

Who it is for

Experienced petrophysicists and geoscientists who interpret complex reservoirs and present interpretation risk to asset teams and management.

Prerequisites: The Intermediate Petrophysics track, or several years of interpretation work.
