Intermediate Petrophysics · Module I7

Handoff to Uncertainty Workflows

Moving from a deterministic interpretation to structured probabilistic inputs: defining low, mid and high values for porosity, saturation, net-to-gross and contacts from evidence, building the input table a reservoir engineer can use, and keeping it versioned and reviewable.

What the module covers

  • Why the deterministic base case comes first
  • Low, mid and high ranges for porosity, saturation and net-to-gross
  • Contact ranges as probabilistic inputs
  • The petrophysical input table and its required fields
  • What the reservoir engineer needs at handoff
  • Version control and peer-review readiness

Learning outcomes

After the module you should be able to:

  • Deliver structured probabilistic inputs for engineering handoff.
  • Define evidence-based ranges for each petrophysical input
  • Deliver an input table a reservoir engineer can use without re-interpretation
  • Keep the inputs versioned so that a rerun reproduces them

A short preview

A range is only useful if the reader knows how it was built. A porosity of 0.18 to 0.24 could be the spread of the log through the zone, the uncertainty in the zone average, or a guess. Those are different quantities, and only the uncertainty in the average belongs in a volumetric Monte Carlo; feeding it the point-to-point spread of the log greatly overstates the range of the answer. The module sets out a table that records, for every input, what the range represents and the evidence behind each end.

Who it is for

Petrophysicists and geoscientists with some interpretation experience, and engineers who review petrophysical inputs before they reach a volumetric or simulation model.

Prerequisites: The Basic Petrophysics track, or equivalent working experience.
