What the module covers

  • What a commercial threshold is
  • Where hurdle rates come from
  • Minimum economic field size
  • Fiscal context, government take and net revenue interest
  • Probability of exceeding a threshold
  • Screening on NPV, IRR and payback together

Learning outcomes

After the module you should be able to:

  • Apply sourced commercial thresholds as the decision gate for screening.
  • Set commercial thresholds before the results are known
  • Report the probability that a project clears each threshold
  • Test how robust a pass or fail is to its assumptions

A short preview

A threshold set after the answer is known is not a threshold. If the minimum economic field size is decided once the volumetrics are in, it tends to drift towards whatever makes the current prospect pass. The module argues for fixing the thresholds first, NPV at the corporate discount rate, an IRR hurdle and a payback limit, and then reporting the probability that the project clears each one. A project with a 45 percent chance of clearing its hurdle is a different proposition from one with 85 percent, even when their medians match.

Who it is for

Petrophysicists, geoscientists and reservoir engineers who need to connect technical work to investment decisions, and analysts new to upstream economics.

Prerequisites: None required; familiarity with volumetric estimates helps.
